Jaden Smith has a sustainable new VISION for New Balance
Jaden Smith's new vegan-friendly sneakers are more than just shoes.
In case you didn’t know, Jaden Smith exists beyond the familiar plane of existence we know as dank meme Twitter. He is, in fact, hard at work making things happen on various fronts, including sustainability. With his latest collab with global brand New Balance, officially called NB for Jaden Smith Vision Racer, is a pair of kicks that pushes the actor-rapper’s passion projects to the fore.
To start, the shoes look…interesting.
The P.R. says that the design is supposed to be a marriage of the classic New Balance design and Smith’s fashion-forward aesthetic. We’re inclined to say that it kind of tips over to the latter side, with cartoonishly large soles that will surely turn heads. As lovers of ube, though, we’re happy that the poster model for this line is a sweet, creamy pastel purple color.
A second design comes in “wavy baby blue”, a no-less loud design. Both sneakers use recycled materials tip-to-tip. Hooray, sustainability!
Beyond the shoes, however, Smith is having New Balance tag along with philanthropic efforts, like having the brand involved in water filtration campaigns in disenfranchised areas.
More than that, Smith tells in an interview with Complex that he wants to go a different route when it comes to marketing the new kicks. “It needs to give back to the culture,” he says. “We need to give away the shoe free to, not influencers, but people that are real people. People that actually need shoes. People that are going to wear the shoes every day, into the ground, how I wear my New Balance shoes into the ground.”
Like his sister, Willow, Jaden has been putting in work at the studio. His 2019 LP “ERYS” has millions of streams on Spotify. He rose to household name-status after starring in the 2010 “Karate Kid” remake and the 2013 sci-fi/thriller “After Earth”, acting alongside his dad and fellow YouTuber, Will Smith.
The NB for Jaden Smith Vision Racer will hit shelves globally on July 24, 2020, priced at $150 (≈PHP 7,400). You can get yours at the New Balance website or in select retail stores locally.
